David Keith McCallum was born in Maryhill, Glasgow, on September 19, 1933. His mom, Dorothy Dorman, played the cello, and his dad was a violinist in London’s Philharmonic Orchestra.

When David was three, they moved to London for his dad’s job. After World War II, he came back to Scotland and lived with his mom in Gartocharn. There, he grew up surrounded by the peaceful beauty of his homeland.

After finishing school at University College School and getting a scholarship, David started working at BBC Radio in 1946. While working there, he enjoyed acting as a hobby. When he was 17, David took part in an outdoor play with the play and pageant union, which allowed him to explore his love for performing even more.

Career

McCallum’s journey began in 1956 when he joined Glyndebourne Company as an assistant manager. Before that, he had already dipped his toes into the entertainment world by working with BBC Radio starting in 1947, where he lent his voice to various boys’ roles. His official acting debut was in the British film “From Whom the Gods Love.” A pivotal moment in his career came after a photo shoot with James Dean, which opened doors for him at Rank Organization in 1956.

In subsequent years, McCallum showcased his versatility by portraying a troubled youth in “Violent Playground” and making his film debut in “Freud: The Secret Passion” in 1962. However, it was his role as Lt Cdr Eric Ashley in the 1963 film “The Great Escape” that catapulted him to fame. Following this success, he graced television screens with appearances in popular series such as “Colditz” and “Kidnapped,” enjoying two fruitful years.

In 1979, McCallum ventured into the realm of science fiction with ITV’s “Sapphire and Steel,” further expanding his repertoire. Throughout his illustrious career, he continuously embraced diverse roles in both film and television, leaving an indelible mark on audiences worldwide.

In 1960, McCallum released four albums with Capitol Records, marking the start of his music career. He showed his musical skills by playing bass in a nightclub scene in “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” He also played different instruments in a Broadway show.

In 2017, a song he sang in the movie “Baby Driver,” reached more people with his music. Apart from music, he wrote a crime novel called “Once a Crooked Man” in 2016. Now, he’s already working on his next book, staying busy with his writing.
